Still great even in the wake of the new Dual Core imacs
Pros
Great Display, great software bundle, excellent connectivity to Wintel Networks
Cons
no upgradable video card or CPU, front row a little weak
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great for the home or office. The integrated iLife software, and awesome display and small footprint make this computer an outstanding value!
I have an iMac G4 17" at the office and now this new G5 20" at home. Wow, I have compared them side-by-side and the display is significantly better! Much brighter, clearer! My 17" G4 is at max brightness, and the 20" is only at half and it is still far brighter. Viewing Hi-Def movie trailers is unbelievable!
Software (iLife etc):
The software is all very well integrated in the iLife suite of software (iLife5). Garageband is an absolute joy to use. My seven-year-old son has created some very interesting songs. The songs can be imported into iTunes and iMovie seamlessly and professional looking DVD's can be created as well. I have also used the "Book" ordering feature in iPhoto which lets you create and upload trip photos for your own Linen bound portfolio. I was completely impressed with the ease of use, and quality of the end result... and it is all integrated into the software. It also arrived in less than 10 days. There really is no lack of software out there for the Mac either... all the best programs are represented.
Network Connectivity:
We recently had a major upgrade of computers at the office, mine is the only Mac. I am connected to the network and have access to all the printers and main server. I also use Windows Remote Access with only one bug to report. There is currently an inability to shadow a user, something that a couple of us do for training in the office... Hopefully Microsoft will address this in a future release.
Security/Viruses/Spyware:
The other great thing that I am sure has been mentioned before... lack of security breeches, viruses, spyware, etc. The Mac OS has also been rock solid.
Front Row:
Nice but need some work. A little slow, and not as intuitive as I would expect from Apple. Navigation could be improved to be more iPod like. Also, front row is missing the visualizer option that is a part of iTunes. The visualizer is a psychedelic video show that dances to the music... this is a glaring omission, but they should be able to address this with future releases.
Mouse:
I like the new scroll button, but the placement of the side buttons causes frequent accidental click... I have since disabled them. However, I would buy it for the scroll function alone.
I could go on and on. But to sum it up... having worked on both platforms, I would highly recommend it.
