AV-480 gives you 80 GB of media in your pocket, for sure!

Pros 80 GB size capable player good UI good sound quality
Cons expensive mysterious glitches
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you can afford it, get it. It's the biggest hard disk on the market, and it just may get you hooked on watching movies on the go!
Our offices moved so I'm now looking out at scenic 92/101 interchange. The noise drives me mad, so I decided to get an MP3 player to drown it out. I have a large collection of (legally ripped) MP3 files, and it's growing, so I needed a player with elbow room, and the Archos AV480 was one of the few that fit the bill.

The unit runs for a long time on batteries before needing a re-charge -- about a working day, when playing MP3s. The sound quality is really good. Good sound is very important to me, because I plug in studio grade headphones (rather than the cheap earbuds that come with any player) and will hear if things are "off".

The Archos AV480 also serves as a dictation or meeting voice recorder, although it will only ADPCM compress, not MP3 compress what you record. There are cables for viewing on TV, recording from video, and recording from external sound sources, which I have not tried.

Once, the unit has hiccupped and given me a directory listing of mysteriously corrupted names. Re-booting the unit seemed to fix the problem, and it hasn't come back. I have over 3,000 MP3 files, all encoded at an average of at least 200 kbps (VBR encoding), and they all seem to play fine. Transferring that large a library from your computer to the device will take a while, even if you have USB2, though!

Regarding construction, it's reasonably solid, and comes with a protective case where it's already survived one 4-foot drop. But I wouldn't plan on taking it mountain climbing, and I'm not letting my kids (6 years and younger) get their hands on it.

It's about $250 more expensive than an iPod, but it has a bigger hard drive, it has a much nicer UI, and it can play movies. Because it was my birthday, I figured I'd treat myself a little bit, but it really does take a bite out of the ol' wallet. I paid $669 + tax & shipping from newegg.com after CompuPlus refused to fulfill my already accepted order.

It's somewhat larger than an iPod, but almost the entire front side is filled by an LCD color display (320x240 pixels) where you can easily read information about the currently playing song, or view a MPEG-4 encoded movie of your choice. Initially, I thought this would be a negative, but now I've used imtoo.com DVD ripper and DivX Pro to encode movies especially for the device, and the quality is surprisingly good. File sizes are as small as 500 MB per hour. I'm hooked, but don't tell my boss!

Pocket players -- they're not just for music anymore! Who woulda thunk it?
