WOW! What a brilliant toy, even for girls!!!

Pros Easy set-up, screen / sound quality, hard drive capacity
Cons Little expensive, no removable battery, no kick stand
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  FAB! Does SO MUCH so treat yourself to one - once you get it, you won't want to let it go!
I've already reviewed this elsewhere but will review here again.

Well, what can I say except ............ great toy! In all honesty, this is one serious piece of kit for either the techy or just those that like gadgets (I fall into the latter group!). If you want something that you can store tons of data on (80GB is massive), then this is for you. Store /view your photos (thousands of them). back up your ENTIRE music collection and also record from TV, DVD or video. If you don't want to miss a programme, just set up the scheduler and the AV480 will do the rest for you - much like a video recorder. I'm not sure how easy it is to put DVDs onto the Archos but I know that if you do manage it, you cannot then view the DVD on your TV screen, only the Archos screen, which is fair enough. If you want a good recording from the TV, ensure that you select 'TV' in the Videocorder set up. This will produce a larger file but a better 'reproduction' of the TV show/film.

The one-time setup of the TV docking cradle is easy enough but there is a multitude of wires, but these are all hidden behind your TV once it's set up. Setting up your cable/Sky box is easy enough to - just ensure that you know the make and model of your Sky/cable box and then it's a synch. I'm not sure how well the 'My Yahoo.tv' works (it's basically a scheduler that you set up on the PC and then download your timer recordings to the AV480). The idea behind this is that you then don't have to go through the rigmerole of setting up your schedules on the Archos, which can be a LITTLE fiddly but not beyond comprehension! If you can set up a timer recording on a video, then you can on this!

This baby comes with a built-in compact flash reader so if you take tons of photos, when the card is full, you can then remove from your camera and download the images to the Archos and then start all over again with an empty compact flash card in your camera. If your camera doesn't use compact flash, don't panic as you can get a 4 in 1 compact flash reader for the Archos which simply slots in the card slot on the AV480 and you then just put in whichever card you use to the adaptor and Bob's your uncle!

This little beauty is both Mac and PC compatible which for me is a must as I use both platforms. When the 480 is plugged into your Mac/PC via USB2, you can then 'view the hard disk' (AV480) on your computer and organise your files more easily than can, admittedly, be done on the AV480.

It is very EASY to update the Firmware and Archos are good at updating the system. Simply connect your Archos to your PC, download the updated Firmware from the Archos website and copy it to the root of the Archos and just update from there - EASY!

The screen quality is good - it's not crystal clear to the point of being on a par with a laptop screen but it is perfectly acceptable, considering its size. Sound is fine, on a par, I'd say, with the iPod.

I was a total MORON and sold my AV480 6 months ago or so but then missed it like I'd chopped my arm off so I've just bought another one! It's going to be coming with me on my trip to Mauritius in January '06 - my first wedding anniversary, going back to where we've been for the past 2 years!!!! YAWN!

If I were you, I'd go and buy one - you work hard enough so I'm sure you deserve it! iPods (and the like) are all well and good but ALL they do is play music and that's it. If you travel a lot, or even if you don't (!), get this - you won't regret it! After all, doesn't it say everything, the fact that I was stupid enough to sell mine and then a few months later, had to buy a replacement because it was like having a limb chopped off!
