An? lea?e us nought but grief an? pain,

The urge to control other?s lives and restrict what they read seems to be just below the surface, always ready to raise its ugly head. People may...

Like Banning the President from the White House
This review is part of a write-in for Censored and Banned Books. It is a topic I have wrestled with in other reviews and in other aspects of my life. I totally support free written expression and a world without authors like John Steinbeck would be a different world indeed. John Steinbeck...

A friend closer than a brother - Of Mice and Men
Have you ever wanted something so badly that you could see it, smell it, touch it - describe it to the finest detail - all the while knowing that your deepest desire would forever remain unattainable? That's the tragedy endured by millions who lived through The Great Depression of the 1930's. There... Read full review »
Novella about loneliness and doomed dreams still packs punch
Roughly a hundred pages, and easily transformed into a play and movie, Of Mice and Men would seem to be Steinbeck’s tightest construction. It has a plot that does not seem forced even though its design is very schematic. Like ancient Greek tragedies--or those of Steinbeck’s contemporary... Read full review »
The greatest novella ever written?
George and Lennie are migrant workers during The Great Depression, and they are best friends. George is very bright, but his experiences have left him jaded and cynical. Lennie, whose last name is ironically “Small,” is a very large, very strong, and not very bright man. They make a... Read full review »
The play Steinbeck adapted from his novella

Of Mice and Men - The only good book in schools
Much like many students in my area, I was 'forced' to read this book in my freshman year of high school. At the time I hated all the books we'd read in the school. They'd all been so dull, with plots that I couldn't (or didn't want to follow) and characters that I just couldn't care for.

He Just Wanted to Tend the Rabbits. Of Mice and Men
John Steinbeck's 1937 novella, Of Mice and Men, is another one of his crowning achievements. I mean, forget about how fantastic books like East of Eden and Cannery Row are--this book is probably his most popular book this side of The Grapes of Wrath.
The book is about two...

Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men: Beautifully Lean, Emotionally Powerful
"I ain't got no people," George said. "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good."
George Milton is not alone. An itinerant ranch worker, he travels from place to place with his friend Lennie Small. They couldn't be more different. George is shrewd,...

Symbolism is Abound in "Of Mice and Men"
American literature has always seen its share of great authors - F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Arthur Miller, and dare I say Kurt Vonnegut? However, no list of great American authors is complete without at least a few novels by John Steinbeck. Most famously known for "The Grapes of Wrath",... Read full review »
