The Bottom Line:
This is an excellent high quality coffee maker. I definitely recommend this machine to anyone who loves a great-tasting, quality cup of coffee.
Wow! What a great coffee maker! If you love coffee, you probably can't do better than this Bunn. Sure, you can buy more expensive coffee makers, but I doubt you'd get a better tasting cup of joe.
I am an avid coffee drinker and have searched for a machine to match the great quality coffee available at upscale restaurants -- coffee that is HOT but not burnt; full of flavor, but not bitter. I understand part of that is in the coffee itself, but a large part is the coffee maker too. In the past, I've tried several brands, including Mr. Coffee, Krups, Gevalia, and Braun. Even quality coffee tasted mediocre from these machines. As a Christmas present, I decided to purchase a new machine. After extensive research, it came down to the Bunn Thermal Coffee Maker or the Capresso MT500. In the end, the Bunn won me over with its brewing speed (3 minutes to a pot of coffee!!), price, and warranty (3-year).
The Bunn Thermal Coffee Maker has a simple, elegant design focused solely on making good coffee. If you are looking for a coffee maker with programmable features, digital clock, pause-and-serve, etc., then this isn't the machine for you. If all you are really interested in is a great cup of coffee, then check out the Bunn. The only "feature" on this machine is a vacation switch (basically an on-off switch). That's it. However, who needs a pause-and-serve function when your whole pot of coffee is ready in three minutes flat (I timed it -- three minutes!)? And what a great cup of coffee!
The two main issues a coffee maker must overcome in order to provide a great cup of coffee are 1) evenly soaking the coffee beans and 2) scalding of the coffee by the "warmer" plate. Bunn has addressed both of these problems. Higher end coffee makers like the Bunn use a spray nozzle to wet the coffee grounds (similar to your showerhead), instead of letting the water drip through a single hole onto the center of the grounds. This allows even soaking of all grounds in the filter basket -- which enhances the coffee flavor. Bunn addressed the burning or scalding issue by doing away with a warmer and using a well-engineered thermal carafe instead. Presto! Hot, flavorful coffee in no time.
The thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot and full of flavor for up to three hours (a little longer if you warm the carafe prior to making the pot of coffee). The stainless steel tub keeps lime build up to a minimum, but Bunn includes a de-liming tool for periodic cleanings.
One word of caution. The reason the Bunn can make a full pot of coffee in three minutes is that it keeps a pot full of water constantly heated to a precise brewing temperature. The first time you use the Bunn, you must follow the instructions to the letter to ensure the coffee maker works as advertised and is ready to go. The directions are not difficult to follow, but you are asked to perform functions in a precise order. If you skip ahead and whoops!...close the lid to the water tank too early, you can end up with a mess on your counter. :)
