Nice outlet adapter, but not quite a surge suppressor
Pros
Lets you plug in all of your bulky adapters in one cool device
Cons
No surge protection, harmful chemicals to be wary of
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Go for the next level up - the PowerSquid Surge - and get the surge suppression this product advertises in its name, yet is blatantly incapable of providing
I received this PowerSquid for Christmas 2 years ago, and it's been a handy little gizmo since then. It's the kind of device that makes you say, "why didn't I think of that?" when you see it - 5 heavy duty grounded plugs extending individually off of a single wall outlet, letting you plug in all of your bulky adapters separated from each other. It comes in a spiffy black-and-yellow color, with an eerie yellow circuit breaker light. My brother loved this for his DJ business, but I've had some issues with mine (see below).
Features/Specifications
5 grounded adapter-ready outlets
4 foot power cord
Yellow lighted master switch with 15-amp circuit breaker
Electrical rating: 125V/15A/1875W
UL Listed
Not rated for outdoor use
Available in Yellow, Black or Silver
Warnings
This product has two caviats - one huge, one minor.
1) THIS IS NOT A SURGE SUPPRESSOR! This is an outlet multiplier - information taken directly from the manufacturer website (http://www.powersquid.net/store_powersquid_comparison.htm). Sure, this has a 15 amp circuit protector on it, but so does the line in the house. It's called the breaker box, and it is your friend. If your house were struck by lightning, Mr. Squidy wouldn't do any good for you, because the house lines are all on 15 amps anyway and would be tripped before the plugs for anything above 15 amps, although it could potentially send as high as that full 15 amps all the way through the Squid to your devices before being tripped. More importantly, you could still get minor spikes that could damage your equipment from other major appliances like dishwashers and air conditioners kicking in. So instead of only having 2 of your bulky adapters plugged into a single working surge strip, now you've got all five devices in your PowerSquid taking damage.
The solution - there is a slightly more expensive alternative from the same company that offers both the intriguing form factor and the surge protection, known as the Powersquid Surge. For $25 instead of $10-15, you get it all in one package! Here's what you should get instead - the one with surge protection, and $100,000 liability coverage.
2) This product contains harmful chemicals such as lead that are known to cause birth defects, as declared right on the packaging. Nice to know that the manufacturer went the distance to maximize profits at the expense of customer safety. Just don't go around licking your power cords, as so many of us are in the habit of doing.
Overall
Clever product, just know what you're buying. There is a better alternative from the same company offering not just surge protection but a liability guarantee, for only $10 more. If you're giving it as a gift, make it the more practical $25 PowerSquid surge.
