Reliable Workhorse of a Laptop
Pros
Well built, Looooong battery life (7hrs), bright 15" screen
Cons
Heavy, Touchpad acts up in humid weather
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you are on the road a lot and regularly show presentations off your laptop without a projector, this is a great solid traveller with great connectivity & screen.
I have bought/received a new laptop every 12 months since the early 1990's (yes, I had a 286 Zenith Supersport mono laptop) -- and I can honestly say I think I might just hold on to the Hewlett-Packard NC6000. I finally have a machine that I don't feel the need to go out and upgrade as soon as I can.
The 15" screen is bright and in my experience (about 1/2 dozen colleagues with the same machine) no problems.
With the 1.7GHz Centrino processor and 1GB of RAM and XP-Pro it is as fast and stable as I need, even on huge database manipulations.
I have swapped out the DVD drive for a second battery which lasts nearly 7hrs if you turn the WiFi & Hard Drive off while you are working.
I also have the small port-replicator (not the full docking bay) which still allows me to "dock" my machine at work in the morning and work of an LCD flat screen and proper keyboard / mouse.
The only complaints I have are:
1 - the touchpad tends to go freaky every so often (when it is humid out) and needs to be reset - but you can use the pointing stick to do that (the machine has both)
2 - It is quite heavy in the bag, but with a 15" screen & 2 batteries I suppose thats to be expected.
3 - No Firewire port on the machine itself, but there is one on the port replicator
4 - The SD card sticks out just a bit too much so it often accidentally ejects in my bag.
Overall it is a great workhorse of a laptop. Mine's fitted with a 3M privacy screen filter (fantastic) and I travel with it almost constantly. Not perfect, but Highly Recommended.
