A polished product (in both senses of the word).

Pros Compact size. Fast. Good accessory software.
Cons Cap not attached, becomes looser. Synchronization software requires Administrator privileges. Not the cheapest 1Gb drive.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Built (reasonably) well, performs well, looks swell. If you want 1Gb of portable storage you'll be happy with this solution.
With of a polished stainless steel case, this flash drive is at the premium end of Lexar's product line. It has reportedly performed well in speed tests, especially for larger files ( > 1Mb) and that's primarily why I purchased it.

Hardware

As far as hardware usability is concerned my only gripe is that I might lose the end cap. It's small and equally polished - which translates as "slippery". Some competing drives have covers that remain attached, and slide back as the drive is inserted. I would have liked to see that technique used on this drive. No lanyard is provided, although there is a lanyard loop integrated into the body of the drive.

Speed and reliability have been fine for me so far.

Your fingerprints will spoil the polished finish, but if you are concerned you can remove them with the included polishing cloth!

Unlike the many plastic flash drives, I would imagine I could step on this drive without disabling it.

(Update 05/2006): While mine is still standing up to my low frequency usage, two other reviewers have found problems with robustness, especially of the cap becoming loose. Please read their reviews for more details. I have also seen this on a friend's JumpDrive though mine is still doing OK in this respect.)

Software

You can plug the drive into a Windows XP machine, with no software or drivers required, and it will show up as an extra disk drive.

There are extra features available from the Lexar software that is included on the drive. One downside here is that you need to have Administrator rights on the PC, to use the software. This seems an unnecessary restriction considering that the flash drive's password is also necessary to run the Lightning software.

You can divide the drive into public and (password-protected) private partitions. So if you keep your email address book in your private partition, you can put photos or other files in the public partition and lend them to a friend or colleague without fear that they will snoop into your address book. You can choose the relative size of these partitions, but if you want to change it you'll lose the files on the drive and have to repopulate it.

The synchronization feature enables you to specify files and folders that you want to maintain on multiple computers. This is good - you don't have to navigate the directories and copy files manually. Just click the button to update the older versions of the files with the newer versions.
