Logitech MX 400 Laser Mouse: Perfectly Precise For My Usage
Pros
Excellent precision, comfortable to hold
Cons
Forward/back buttons can be easy to press accidentally
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The MX 400 is an excellent mouse for everyday computer use and gaming. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, yet precise mouse.
The mouse I had been using for the last few years had begun to fail several months ago. It started to work only intermittently, depending on the position of the cable that connected it to my USB port. When the problem became unbearable (and got me defeated in a few video games), I switched to another mouse that I had stored in my spare computer parts cabinet. The mouse was poor quality and died after only weeks.
I purchased the Logitech MX 400 Laser Mouse, since my husband had been happily using one for some time. I have been very happy with it as well.
Design
The MX 400 is a moderately-sized mouse measuring 2.6 inches wide, 4.9 inches deep, and 1.7 inches high. It’s a rather large input device to use with a laptop, but I tend to use my XPS M1530 as a desktop replacement system. This mouse has been appropriate for that usage. The mouse’s size combined with its ergonomic design makes it very comfortable for me to use, even with my small hands. The contours and rubber grips are well placed, preventing my hand from cramping, even after hours of use.
The MX 400 is a wired mouse, connecting to the computer via its USB port. A USB to PS/2 adapter is included to support that connection as well.
The mouse has a tilt wheel with a zoom, allowing you to scroll vertically and horizontally. The mouse also has forward and back buttons on its left side. I found these to be too easy to hit accidentally. They are positioned directly under where my thumb naturally rests. I’ve had to make a concerted effort to keep my thumb away from these buttons.
Usage
I primarily use my laptop for schoolwork, picture editing, and digital scrapbooking, as well as a moderate amount of gaming. I enjoy adventure and simulation games, in addition to online massively multiplayer role playing games such as City of Heroes and City of Villains. I’ve found this laser mouse to be excellent for all of these uses as it is very precise. I am able to edit the smallest details in photos with perfect control of my editing programs. I am able to control my characters in City of Heroes with ease and click quickly between my power sets.
I love that this mouse is wired. It prevents me from having to go through tons of batteries or deal with a charger, both of which can be an inconvenience. The cord is short enough that it doesn’t get in the way when I use it with my laptop, but it is long enough that my husband can use it with his desktop. It has rather simple features, but I prefer this to mice with too many shortcut buttons. The tilt wheel is precise and the zoom is helpful. I don’t use the forward and back buttons often, as I prefer to simply click the forward/back buttons in my web browser.
Installing the mouse was instant as it functions well as a plug and play device.
Compatibility
This mouse works with both PC and Mac systems. Logitech’s website states this mouse is compatible Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP, though I have been able to use it with Windows Vista without a problem. It also works with Mac OS 10.2.8+.
Price
The product comes with a five-year warranty. I purchased this mouse for $42.99 at Best Buy and I felt the price was reasonable for the quality of the product.
