The Bottom Line:
One year later, I still buy this drive for price, MTBF and performance.
I have been using four of these drives in about 3 different SATA raid configurations for a year now. I have tested them on AMD to Intel boxes in Windows and Linux with no problems. They are very quiet and quite fast. With all four spinning the sound of the cpu fan is still louder!
For comparison, I own two Western Digital Raptor 36Gb drives. They normally cost twice as much as the Maxtor model. Additionally, they are quite loud while idling. Finally, when conducting large read and write operations the Raptors "ping" loudly. I have yet to hear the Maxtor ping!
They have a small capacity when compared to other SATA drives, but I wanted everyone to know they are a good alternative to the Western Digital Raptor series, if you are looking for a raid setup.
The 6L080M0 features NCQ technology. Native Command Queuing allows the individual hard disk to receive more than one I/O request at a time and then decide which to complete first. Based on the position of the drive's heads at the time of the request, the drive will decide which request to perform first. As a result, the hard drives spends less time seeking for sectors, which increases the speed of the drive overall. Hard drives that have NCQ perform even better in RAID setups.
Another reason to consider this drive is that it does not generate a lot of heat.
My only problem is their size, I wish they were half height so that I could have more room in my cases!
