The Bottom Line:
For a WWII FSP game, it is average. A buy only if discounted from full price.
I am a first person shooter nut now that I am addicted to Halo. I have been trying to find something that is close to the game, but for the Wii. Add to the fact that I am a cheapskate and refuse to pay over $40 for a video game and also have to find games that are somewhat kid friendly and I found Medal of Honour: Vanguard. A WWII game that joins the many other titles out there for FSP games.
The game is based around the 82nd airborn and how the concept of paratroopers was created during WWII. It is was kind of startling to read a quote for Dwight Eisenhower on how he thought the paratroopers were useless. The video starts with some WWII footage and gives you a background on how the paratrooper helped win the war. You air drop right into a battle and go to it.
The game has three levels of difficulty and I have only played the easiest of the three "Recruit". After a couple boards you realize you can take some good damage before you would die, so I found myself going berzerker and running amoke while offing the Germans. I will have to play the game again in the harder difficulties so that I can get a better feel for the game.
The Wii remote is used fairly well in this game with the nunchuck and the remote in hand. You can carry two weapons and throw gernades. Throwing a gernade is made quite difficult and the game really could have used a basic training for the soldier so that gernades can be thrown where you intended them to go. I gave up trying to toss grenades because I could not get them where I wanted them, and I could easily overwhelm the enemy.
The use of a button or the movement of the wii remote or nunchuck provided all the neccesary reloading and movement you needed. The remote became annoying at times because you would have difficulty keeping your sites on the enemy. Especially if you had to duck and cover quickly.
I loved the story and the settings for each of the levels and the tasks were simple and your fellow patriots yelled out what you needed to do throughout the game. It helped and I was never at a point in the game where I wondered what I needed to do next. The weaponry varied on accuracy. You start each level with a weapon and a pistol. Run out of ammo and you can pick up the enemy weaponry. Be warned though some of the weapons are very hard to aim with. I usually dropped the pistol and carried a sniper rifle or bolt action rifle and the other weapon would be an automatic machine gun of some sort. The American weapons were by far more accurate and more deadly. A major flaw if you ask me.
I found the graphics were standard for the Wii and could have been better, but I am not complaining. The backgrounds were a little dull with color, but it made me feel like I was close to being in a movie. The scenery reminded me a lot of "Band of Brothers" or "Saving Private Ryan". It gave me a WWII feel.
The game runs from mid 1943 to the end of the European fighting in 1945. I like the progression of the story, and feel bad for the character "Keegan", because he gets really beat up during battle. As far as the single player goes, one of the better I played. The games biggest flaw is the multiplayer.
My kids and I played the multiplayer and realized from the start that the Axis (Germans) are at a major disadvantage in multiplayer. Their weapons are not as good, and with the American weapons being so much better, you stand very little chance. You can pick up the weapons from the dead, but once you die, you are back to square one.
Another flaw in this game is the respawn points. They are the same. You come back to life in the almost exact spot every time, so once your opponents kill you, they can set you up to be killed before you can even get a chance to duck for cover. My boys got so good at this, that they soundly kicked my butt when we played. We then switched sides and when they became the Axis, they soundly lost. Not quite what I would expect from a multiplayer game.
There is no co-op in this game and that is sad to. Nothing would be better than moving through the good single player with a friend.
For the price, I am not regretting the purchase, but if I had bought this when it first came out I would have been disapointed.
