Surround Sound for your PC and TV, The Easy Way
Stop juggling speakers, surround sound headphones will make your ears and neighbors happy!
If you’re like me, your computer (or home office) probably isn’t perfectly arranged to allow for flawless 5.1 speaker arrangement. For gamers who want to get the most out of their multimedia experiences and movie buffs looking for a way to enjoy action flicks on their work laptops, there’s an easier solution.
This solution comes in the form of 5.1 surround sound headphones. Quaint, compact, comfortable, and loaded with features; a set of 5.1 headphones can change the way you experience multimedia on your computer. Some surround sound headphones try to create a multi-channel sound field by actually implementing multiple speakers on each ear of the headphone. Another method of creating surround sound in a headset is by means of simulation. Dolby Laboratories in my opinion accomplishes this effect to great success with their Dolby Headphone Technology that you can find in a variety of different headsets.
Buying an all-in-one headphone solution for surround sound has the benefit of being simple, and requiring very little setup, but my favorite solution comes in the form of the Astro Gaming Mixamp. This little box has a variety of inputs (optical, RCA, coaxial) and allows you to connect any standard set of headphones to it while the box handles the multi-channel processing (using Dolby Headphone Technology) and mixes it into 2 channels for headphones. The sound quality is remarkable, the setup is plug and play, and being able to use any set of headphones you can get your hands on is truly awesome. The Astro Gaming Mixamp also has a ton of features for gamers, including inputs for your microphone (for in-game chatting), it can be powered by batteries or USB 2.0, and you can tether together multiple Mixamps making this little device the perfect party favor for LAN parties.
Astro Gaming also makes a wireless Mixamp, giving you the option of enjoying surround sound untethered. Their products receive my highest recommendation. My current arrangement has my PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 all plugged into an optical switcher that leads into my Mixamp. I’m able to enjoy my movies and games in full digital surround sound, all while not disturbing my wife as she watches America’s Next Top Model reruns on the couch.
I live in a big city in an apartment. Setting up a floor shaking surround sound system at my computer or even my television just doesn’t make sense in my living space. Surround sound headphones fill the void nicely. Among the top manufacturers are Logitech, Pioneer, Sony, and then of course Astro. Pick up a set and never worry about cranking the volume knob at 2 am ever again.
