Yes, it's true that 90% of the time Broadway fans will want the original Broadway cast recording over any other version, and 95% of the time the full recording will beat any set of "highlights." But this collection of songs from the Rent movie may defy both trends. Rentheads surely have the two-disc Broadway version already, and this well-selected 65 minutes may satisfy their desire to have performances from the movie as well (and the movie has less music than the show anyway). On the other end of the spectrum, people who enjoyed the movie but don't feel the compulsion to own every note of what they heard might well be pleased with a single disc of highlights. An extremely classy mix of songs for what ultimately was an extremely flat film. Al Green's elegant blend of jazz, soul and funk is indicative of sweeping romantic tracks like "Love Is a Beautiful Thing." The album also contains playful moments like Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa's "Sambolero," Perry Como's "Papa Loves Mambo," and Rick James' "Super Freak." The eclectic mix is charged with charged numbers like Richie Havens' "Follow" and Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up." A cartoon that could make Fritz the Cat blush, the cable television show Drawn Together isn't above turning anything into a genitalia joke, but where it really shows its smarts is with its songs. Sure "Black Chick's Tongue" starts with "What is this thing in my mouth/It's slippery, and it's slimy" but when combined with music that is straight out of the house of mouse, the track is a fall-over funny parody of the song any given Disney princess will sing once they start yearning for more (see "Part of Your World" or "A Whole New World").
