It's the early years of the 20th-century, and troubled young Midwestern girl Catherine Land has learned to fend for herself using a combination of craftiness, sex appeal, and a dim view on conventional morality. So when she sees an advertisement by a wealthy businessman looking for "a reliable wife" she sets off with the intention of marrying him--and then slowly poisoning him with arsenic. However, as their twisted marriage progresses, Catherine and her new husband find their relationship changing in strange and unexpected ways. Robert Goolrick's dark debut novel takes its devilish premise and then spins it out into a satisfyingly complex emotional pattern. Less

Pros Clean, crisp prose; VERY accessible
Cons Can get dry, but only because of the subject matter
Recommended it? Yes

The gist:

* Text book posing as non-fiction

* Lightens up what should be a dry subject

* Clean, crisp prose makes for a good read

This book was written just for me.

OK, maybe that's not entirely true -- I have never met Charles Petzold and, beyond his... Read full review »

I wish this book was published when I was in school

Pros plain english explanation of how codes and computers work
Cons none really
Recommended it? Yes

I wouldn't have struggled through my dry as heck Computer Science classes if this book was around then. Charles has a habit of creating good books on dry stuff. I mean, let's face it, figuring out how transistors and codes work is not really super fun. It can be amusing, it can even be interesting,... Read full review »

Pros Well developed characters, twisty plot
Cons Weak establishment and use of place, a few too many throbbing loins
Recommended it? Yes

What is the difference, really, between placing a newspaper advertisement for a wife and joining a singles club or an online dating service or even going to events or locations where you're likely to meet people who might become future mates?  Nothing at all.  Time and technology have... A Lurid tale about deception in _a Reliable Wife_

Pros Some very descriptive writing.
Cons The general tawdriness of it all.
Recommended it? Yes

I always keep my eyes open for something new in the historical fiction market, especially if it's in a place or time that I don't know much about, or has a plot that contains a mystery. There's something that I enjoy tremendously about being able to figure out a puzzle, and in Robert Goolrick's... Read full review »
