For those of you who never played the original Caesar, or the even better Caesar II, you should know that this is a game of construction. If you need a comparison, it most closely resembles SimCity--some fans even call it SimRome. In Caesar III, you take on the job of a provincial governor in the Roman Empire, trying to extend the borders of Roman civilization and raising a great city out of the pagan dust. You build roads, clear forests, and plunk down virtually every kind of building and structure that was common in cities 2,000 years ago, all while fighting off the occasional barbarian horde and trying to make a profit on the venture. BioShock is a unique game that mixes a spine-chilling setting illustrated with art deco art and architecture, sci-fi themes of bio-genetic mutation and self-modification, a deep storyline with open-choice freedom to interact with the world as you choose, and first-person action that requires you to think every time you pull the trigger. After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn Less

For a long time I avoided the Caesar series. I had first seen the original Caesar years ago on my trusty AMIGA 500 and never could make head or tail out of it. The single floppy disc which it came on soon found its way to the darkest reaches of my disc box, never to emerge again.

Caesar 2... Read full review »

Ave atque Vale (lightly updated)

Pros Challenging, absorbing, and gorgeously rendered
Cons You may not surface for hours
Recommended it? Yes

With the frenzy, justifiably, building over the release of Pharaoh, leave us not forget the zenith (to date) of the City Building Series sequence that fathered the genre, Caesar III.

C3 is to C2 what the Concorde is to a Wright-Curtiss biplane; and C2 was itself very good indeed.

Cons Terrible ending, no multiplay

In Bioshock, the latest 3D action game from 2K games, something is rotten in the city of Rapture. Shortly after surviving a plane crash, the player finds himself descending via a bathysphere from a lighthouse to the submerged city of Rapture.

No sooner does the player arrive at Rapture,... Read full review »

Pros Original story, great graphics, atmospheric.
Cons Game is short. A bit predictable storyline.

I have been addicted to this game since my wife convinced me to buy it. The idea was that we would play through it together as we did with Gabriel Knight, Fatal Frame, and the classic horror game Phantasmagoria. Of course, I did not end up waiting on her.

It's a creepy game, full of... Read full review »
